چکیده

In this paper we consider a panel data model with error components that are both spatially and time-wise correlated. The model blends specifications typically considered in the spatial literature with those considered in the error components literature. We introduce generalizations of the generalized moments estimators suggested in Kelejian and Prucha (1999. A generalized moments estimator for the autoregressive parameter in a spatial model. International Economic Review 40, 509–533) for estimating the spatial autoregressive parameter and the variance components of the disturbance process. We then use those estimators to define a feasible generalized least squares procedure for the regression parameters. We give formal large sample results for the proposed estimators. We emphasize that our estimators remain computationally feasible even in large samples. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: C13; C21; C23

SFB 823 Improved GMM estimation of panel data models with spatially correlated error components

We modify a previously suggested GMM estimator in a spatial panel regression model by taking into account the difference between disturbances and regression residuals and derive its asymptotic properties. Simulation results and an empirical application to Indonesian rice data illustrate the improvement in finite samples. JEL Classification: C13, C21

Maximum likelihood estimation of spatially and serially correlated panels with random effects

An estimation framework and a user-friendly software implementation are described for maximum likelihood estimation of panel data models with random effects, a spatially lagged dependent variable and spatially and serially correlated errors. This specification extends static panel data models in the direction of serial error correlation, allowing richer modelling possibilities and more thorough...

Testing in a Random Effects Panel Data Model with Spatially Correlated Error Components and Spatially Lagged Dependent Variables

We propose a random effects panel data model with both spatially correlated error components and spatially lagged dependent variables. We focus on diagnostic testing procedures and derive Lagrange multiplier (LM) test statistics for a variety of hypotheses within this model. We first construct the joint LM test for both the individual random effects and the two spatial effects (spatial error co...

Testing for random effects in panel models with spatially correlated disturbances

In the empirical analysis of panel data the Breusch Pagan statistic has become a standard tool to infer on unobserved heterogeneity over the cross section. Put differently, the test statistic is central to discriminate between the pooled regression and the random effects model. Conditional versions of the test statistic have been provided to immunize inference on unobserved heterogeneity agains...

Spatial Dependence with Common Factors: A Case Study of Growth in Iran's Provinces

The economic components of a geographic region, such as its economic growth, are influenced by the spillover effect of other regions’ economic components. In addition to these spatial dependences, there are common factors, such as oil price, that induce a correlation among the economic variables of the geographic regions. Thus, it is necessary to distinguish between the dependence created by th...
